What is Baby led weaning (BLW)?

Baby-led weaning (BLW) is a feeding method that entails introducing solid foods to a baby in a manner that allows them to self-feed, as opposed to spoon-feeding. Babies are given a selection of soft, age-appropriate foods in pieces or sticks that they can independently grasp and place in their mouths.

BLW emphasizes allowing infants to explore and appreciate a variety of textures and flavors, while also fostering the development of their oral motor skills and independence. Babies are encouraged to self-regulate their food intake, choose what and how much they consume, and gradually develop their chewing and swallowing skills, as opposed to relying on purees and spoon-feeding.

Typically, baby-led weaning begins around 6 months of age, when a baby is developmentally able to sit up unassisted, grasp objects, and transport food to their mouth. Soft fruits and vegetables, cooked proteins, grains, and dairy products are suitable for BLW.

BLW may not be appropriate for all infants, especially those with certain medical conditions or feeding difficulties. Additionally, it is essential to always supervise an infant while he or she is eating and to be aware of potential choking hazards. Before beginning BLW, it is recommended to consult a healthcare provider, as with any other feeding method.
